Hair loss is a common problem affecting both men and women, often leading to a significant impact on confidence levels. Male pattern hair loss (MPHL) is the most common cause of hair loss. Other causes include female pattern hair loss, scarring, trauma, burns, and more.
Male pattern hair loss is caused by increased sensitivity of hair follicles to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a byproduct of testosterone (male hormone). This type of hair loss is seen in both men and women, typically affecting the frontal and crown areas of the scalp, while the back of the scalp usually remains unaffected.
Individuals with MPHL who do not have systemic disorders or local causes of hair loss, such as infections, are ideal candidates for hair transplantation.
What to Expect During Surgery
Before surgery, the patient undergoes routine blood tests. The hair loss pattern is assessed by the plastic surgeon, and the areas for implantation of hair follicles are designed in consultation with the patient to match their preferred hairstyle. For males, the hair is trimmed short, whereas, for females, only the donor area (where hair is extracted) is trimmed.
At the Department of Plastic Surgery, Daya General Hospital, FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is the procedure of choice. This technique involves extracting individual hair follicles from the back of the scalp, where hair is resistant to hair fall, and implanting them in areas of hair loss.
The procedure is performed under mild sedation and local anesthesia. It is generally painless and takes about 7–8 hours, depending on the number of follicles required. Patients can usually go home the same evening.
Post-Operative Outcomes
After the procedure, the patient must wear a surgical cap provided by the hospital for one week. Hair washing with a mild shampoo is allowed 5–7 days post-surgery. Regular activities can be resumed after the first hair wash.
It is normal for transplanted hair to fall out in the first few weeks—a temporary phenomenon. New hair growth begins around three months post-surgery, and final results with good hair density are typically visible within nine months.
Scope of Hair Transplant
Hair transplantation is primarily performed for the scalp, with the back of the scalp serving as the donor site. However, chest and body hair can also be used as donor sites when needed.
Beard Transplant:
Suitable for individuals with sparse beard growth or those looking to change their beard style. It is also indicated for individuals with beard loss due to burns or trauma.
Eyebrow Transplant:
Ideal for those who have lost part or all of their eyebrows due to trauma, cancer treatment, or burns.
